To serve individual AEC leaders, project teams, and company executive groups by co-authoring remarkable Leadership Narratives that help them win better work and recruit better people.
We have an image problem in AEC. The challenge stems from how the industry is organized, multiple project delivery methods, low barriers to entry, how much money is at risk, safety flaws, and other factors. Is it any wonder profits are so thin and 75% of AEC companies have difficulty attracting talent? I have a solution! I help individuals, teams, and entire companies write and use engaging Leadership Narratives.
I have been an AEC industry advisor since 1988. At some point more evaluations, workshops, and conferences are not the answer. Eventually the leader needs to put all of that training, development, and knowledge into practice. That's where I come in.
It is brief written document that tells a clear, concise, and compelling story about the leadership philosophy of an individual, team, or an entire company. It helps you win work that is not so fee sensitive. It helps you recruit better. It's an innovative and potent communication tool.
Do you believe leaders are born, or built? Either way, what is your leadership story? What is the narrative you tell yourself - about yourself - as a leader? Is your Leadership Narrative accurate, does it explain your philosophy, and is it actionable? My experience is that companies invest a small fortune in leadership assessments, training, and development. But, then folks slip right back to their old narratives! They "chase work" and "put out fires." They'll, "figure it out later." They're "just following orders." And when they recruit new team members, it gets worse, "forget about work-life balance, this is construction." Or, "don't rock the boat" and "fit in, or find another job." The bottom line: they don't sound like leaders when I talk to them, or read proposals crafted by them.
That's because they don't have a written Leadership Narrative. So, they do not include their Leadership Narrative in their conversations, communications, proposals, and while recruiting new team members. At the end of the day, isn't leadership what you are selling? Whether you are trying to win that next big project, or recruit that next superstar, leadership is the intangible that the customer is actually buying. Then, they use your tangible benefits like schedule to justify selecting you.
Maybe you need a mentor who has actually served the AEC industry for over 35 years; someone who can really listen to you. Maybe that mentor also needs to be a strong writer who can fuse your Leadership Narrative into plain English. Maybe you need communication coaching to use that Leadership Narrative to inspire and align your teams, attract new team members, and win more and better customers.
I made a discovery 25 years ago that changed my views on leadership. I know why leaders can receive leadership assessments and attend workshops and still not move the needle. It's because they do not use humankind's most powerful communication tool: storytelling.
Psychologists know that storytelling is a leadership tool. Recent advancements in neuroscience provide empirical proof as to why. Look, we live an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world. Leaders need every tool they can to inspire others and align resources. I can help you write an inspired Leadership Narrative. Working with me is an empowering way to merge and apply all of your training, development, and life experience.
And I do this using communication tools I have refined over decades of leadership development work across the U.S.
At work.
